7 Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon

Working with an experienced plastic surgeon ensures you end up with fantastic results you’ll enjoy for many years to come, if not the rest of your life. This means you shouldn’t randomly select a name from a list of plastic surgeons in Houston. Instead, you should have a consultation with three to five doctors to discuss their qualifications and experience.

Ask the following seven questions to make sure you’ve found a skilled doctor to perform your procedure.

How long have you been a plastic surgeon?

This question pertains to both the number of years the surgeon has been practicing and how many patients he or she has worked on. Look for at least a decade of experience and a few dozen patients who have received the same surgery you want.

What procedures do you specialize in?

As you can imagine, operating on a nose full of bone and cartilage is quite different from performing a breast lift, which deals with soft tissue. Make sure the plastic surgeon you choose has substantial experience with the procedure you’re considering.

Can I view before and after photos?

Assessing a surgeon’s experience is important, but so is getting an idea of their aesthetic tastes. The best method is to look at before and after photos. Pay careful attention to “before” photos of patients with qualities similar to you, and see how the surgeon tailored the procedure to achieve a desirable outcome, as seen in the “after” photo.

Are you board-certified?

The government doesn’t require surgeons to receive specific training in the procedures they offer. This means doctors with general surgery experience can start performing plastic surgery with no additional medical training. That’s why it’s so important to ask each surgeon you interview: “Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)?”

Is your facility accredited?

Your safety during your plastic surgery relies heavily on the facility and the anesthetist’s qualifications. Ask if the operating room is accredited and what background the anesthetist has. Look for either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Board Certified Anesthesiologist.

What are your other qualifications?

Being board-certified and operating an accredited facility are the most important things, but look for other qualifications that set surgeons apart, such as fellowships, hospital privileges, committee memberships and surgical unit directorships

Will I receive materials that help me prepare for my procedure and recovery?

It’s vital for you to feel comfortable with your surgery before you schedule an appointment. Your surgeon should walk you through the procedure and recovery process as well as provide you with printed materials of benefits, risks and reminders.
